Zya Vann Oklahoma, SEC, 2025-26

34 starts in the SEC at Oklahoma: a .487 true shooting mark at 19.3% usage. 156 of her 326 tracked shots (48%) were midrange twos, made 54 times; she was 44 of 66 at the rim and 36 of 109 from three (33%). 3.0 steals per 40.

Discipline

The points a team gives away: fouls, the bonus, turnovers and free throws.

Fouls and the bonus

TeamQ1Q2Q3Q4with OTPer 100 poss.Minutes other team in bonus
Texas335319.72.1
FDU227421.11.6

The 5th team foul of a quarter puts the other team in the bonus, two shots on every foul; fourth-quarter fouls carry into overtime. Fewer minutes in the bonus means fewer free trips handed over.

Turnovers

TeamLive-ballstolenDead-ballPer poss.Points off them
Texas6312.7%12
FDU81025.4%22

A live-ball turnover (a steal) usually becomes a fast break the other way; a dead-ball one lets the defense set up. "Points off them" are scored by the other team.

Ball security

Who turns it over, and how often against how many assists. A stolen (live-ball) turnover usually becomes a fast break the other way. Assist-to-turnover ratio matters most for the guards who run the offense; in the women's game about 1.5 is good, 2.0 and up is elite. Players under 100 minutes are marked as small samples.

Every player is under 100 minutes so far, so treat all of these as small samples.

How to read this

HomerProof is an independent, fan-built analytics hub. Every Texas possession is rebuilt from public play-by-play and checked against the box score before it is used.

The numbers we use

Possession
One trip down the floor, ending in a made shot, a defensive rebound, a turnover or the end of a period. An offensive rebound keeps the same possession going. Both teams get about the same number, so per-possession numbers compare fairly no matter how fast a game is played.
Points per possession
Points scored divided by possessions. About 0.90 is average in women's Division I; 1.05 and up is elite.
The four factors
Nearly every result comes down to four things, on both ends: shooting (effective field goal percentage), turnovers (turnovers per possession), rebounding (share of your own misses you get back) and free throws (attempts per shot). Shooting matters most, then turnovers, then rebounding, then free throws.
Effective FG%
Field goal percentage with a made three worth one and a half makes, because it is worth 50% more points.
True shooting (TS%)
One efficiency number for a scorer that counts twos, threes and free throws. About 51% is average in women's Division I; 58% and up is very good.
Usage
The share of her team's possessions a player finishes with a shot, free throws or a turnover while she is on the floor. 20% is a typical starter; 28% and up is a primary option.
Offensive rebound rate
The share of a team's own misses it rebounds. About a third is typical in the women's game.
Zones
Rim (under 4 feet), short midrange (4 to 14), long midrange (14 feet to the arc), corner three and above-the-break three. Rim shots and threes are the efficient ones.
Garbage time
Possessions once a game is out of reach: a margin over 25 with 10 or more minutes left, over 20 with under 10, over 15 under 5, over 10 under 2. "Competitive" numbers leave them out.
The bonus
In the women's game, a team's 5th foul of a quarter sends the other team to the line for two shots on every foul for the rest of the quarter, and fourth-quarter fouls carry into overtime. We count how many minutes each team spent with the other in the bonus.
Player ratings
Nine skills, each a real number placed on a fixed scale set for women's Division I, from 25 to 99: 50 is a typical rotation player and 85 and up is elite. Scoring is points per 40 minutes; efficiency is true shooting; three-point shooting needs 40 attempts and finishing 25 shots at the rim; playmaking is assist rate; ball security is turnovers per 40; rebounding is the share of available rebounds; getting to the line is free throw attempts per shot; defensive playmaking is steals plus blocks per 40. Ratings use this season once a player passes 100 minutes, and last season's college numbers until then. Freshmen get ratings after 100 college minutes. The women's scale is anchored to women's games: each men's anchor is scaled by how the two games compare on that measure (for example, true shooting averages about 51% in the women's games we track and 56% in the men's).
Per 40
A player's numbers scaled to 40 minutes, so a reserve and a starter compare fairly.

How we work

Every game is pulled the morning after it is played, rebuilt possession by possession, and checked against the official box score: points, shots, threes, free throws, turnovers, rebounds and minutes. A game that doesn't reconcile isn't used until it is fixed.

Scouting keys are written before tip-off and graded after the final, in public, whether they hit or miss.

Small samples are labeled. Early in the season one game is a first look, not a tendency.

No opinions, just data. No injury reports.

Texas 85 Fairleigh Dickinson 65

Wed, Nov 4Moody CenterTexas now 1-0

A 22-2 start and 20 offensive rebounds, with the shot mix and the arc defense to fix

Texas scored the first 22 points of the season against 2 and led by 22 seven minutes in. After a 30-8 first quarter the result was never in doubt, and garbage time began with 9:51 left. In the 56 Texas possessions before that, it scored 1.18 points per possession and allowed 0.75. Two things won it: Fairleigh Dickinson turned it over on 15 of its 56 competitive possessions (27%), and Texas got 20 of its misses back for the game (48%), seven of them by Breya Cunningham. Two things are worth watching: half of Texas' shots (38 of 75) came from midrange, and Fairleigh Dickinson made 10 of 20 threes. One game against a team far below Texas' level is a first look at how this group plays, not a measure of how good it is.

Texas won three of four, and the two that decided it were turnovers and the offensive glass. Before garbage time Fairleigh Dickinson gave it away on 27% of its possessions, 7 of the 15 on steals. Texas rebounded 47% of its own misses in that stretch, which turned a 47% effective shooting night into 1.18 points a trip. The one factor Texas lost was shooting, 49% to 57%, and it lost it at the arc: Fairleigh Dickinson made half its threes and Texas took only 12.

Texas got to the rim 25 times (33% of its shots) but made only 13, 52%, a number that should rise. The bigger question is the middle of the floor: 38 of its 75 shots (51%) were midrange twos, made 16 times, for about 0.84 points a shot, and only 12 were threes. At the other end Fairleigh Dickinson took 17 above-the-break threes and made 8, worth 1.41 a shot. Whether those were open looks or contested makes is not something the play log shows.

What Texas did well, and what it didn't

What went well

  • The offensive glass. 20 offensive rebounds and 48% of Texas misses back. Breya Cunningham had 7 of them with 13 rebounds in all.
  • Turnovers forced. 18 Fairleigh Dickinson turnovers on 71 possessions (25%) and 22 Texas points off them to 12. Madison Booker had 5 steals.
  • Ball security. 9 Texas turnovers on 71 possessions (13%), 5 of them in the second quarter alone.
  • Cunningham inside. 21 points on 8 of 14, 4 of 4 at the line, in 29 minutes.
  • Free throws. 12 of 14 (86%).

What didn't

  • The three-point line, at both ends. Fairleigh Dickinson made 10 of 20, Reese Downey 5 of 11. Texas took 12 threes in 75 shots.
  • The midrange diet. 38 midrange attempts, about half of Texas' shots, at under a point a shot.
  • Finishing. 13 of 25 at the rim (52%).
  • The second quarter. 5 turnovers in 20 trips and a quarter lost 19-14.
  • Transition defense. Fairleigh Dickinson scored 12 fast-break points to Texas' 2.

Why Texas wonThe contributing factors, most important first

  • 1. Turnovers. 15 Fairleigh Dickinson turnovers on 56 competitive possessions, 6 of them in the first quarter's 19.
  • 2. Second chances. 20 offensive rebounds. Texas missed 41 shots and got almost half of them back.
  • 3. The start. 22-2 in the first seven minutes. The rest of the game was even, 63-63, and much of Fairleigh Dickinson's share came in garbage time.
  • 4. The opponent. Fairleigh Dickinson is a Northeast Conference team, now 0-2. The numbers above should be read against that.

What we learnedIn order of confidence

  • This team can own the offensive glass. 20 offensive rebounds, 7 by Cunningham. It is one game, but rebounding is a skill that tends to hold, and it is the key for Northern Colorado, a strong offensive rebounding team.
  • The defense creates turnovers. 25% of Fairleigh Dickinson's possessions ended in one, about where Texas forced them last season (30%).
  • The starting five is set and it works. Booker, Cunningham, Vann, Preston and Clark were +19 in 40 competitive possessions. Zya Vann started in her first game for Texas.
  • Open question: the shot mix. Half the shots from midrange and 12 threes. Last season Texas took 19% of its shots from three; this was 16%.
  • Open question: the arc defense. 10 of 20 allowed. One game of opponent shooting is mostly noise, which is why it is a key for Saturday rather than a conclusion.

HomerProof keys for Fairleigh Dickinson

No keys for this game. HomerProof starts writing keys for Texas women with Northern Colorado, the second game of the season.

Carry into Northern Colorado on Saturday: the keys are holding the Bears under 30% of their own misses, turnovers on 25% or more of their possessions, and keeping them under 33% from three. Texas cleared the first two here; the third is the open question from this game.

Everything is measured per possession. Garbage time is left out of the reads where noted (15 of 71 Texas possessions here). Effective field goal % counts a three as one and a half makes. Shot zones come from court location. A run is a stretch where one team outscores the other by 8 or more while giving up 2 or fewer. Possessions, shots, turnovers, rebounds and every player's minutes reconcile to the box score. Built from public sources.
